A 3rd of teaching time is devoted to developing students’ written and oral fluency in Spanish, supported by language laboratory, video and satellite TV facilities and regular classes with native-speakers; level 1 provides a grounding in the language, culture, history and society of Spain and Latin America; suitably qualified dual Honours students can also take Portuguese or Catalan; levels 2 and 3 allow students to plan their work to suit their particular interests, offering a broad coverage of Spanish and Latin American culture, history, society, films and sport; level 3 also includes practically-based modules on interpreting, translating, and teaching. Polish A third of teaching time is spent taking modules in Polish, where students are taught by members of permanent staff and native speaker lectors; students follow a course in Polish language and history at level 1; at level 2, students take a language course designed to prepare them for the year abroad, and a module devoted to Polish culture and literature; at level 3, following their year abroad, students take a module called 'varieties of written and spoken Polish', which builds on skills developed in country; students also undertake a large scale project in Polish studies involving substantial reading in the target language; the 3rd year is spent abroad, with placements in Poland (currently Cracow) and in a Spanish-speaking country; there are a range of year abroad options in Spain and Latin America, and placements with the British Council's teaching assistantship schemes in Spain and Latin America.
