Want to study at a British university but don't have the correct qualifications? The International Foundation Programme (IFP) at the University of Reading is an intensive access course providing you with the academic training, language and study skills to start your undergraduate studies with knowledge and confidence.

The IFP is delivered by the International Study and Language Institute (ISLI) at the University of Reading, which specialises in providing a range of language courses and academic training to international students and the wider University community. With programmes that have over 30 years' experience, the ISLI has established a reputation for academic excellence and student support. The University's top-class facilities and supportive learning environment ensure that all of the students can achieve their potential.

The IFP gives you the confidence and knowledge to succeed in undergraduate study. It will:

  • provide you with academic training in three subjects relevant to your intended degree
  • enable you to acquire the study and life skills which you will need on your degree programme
  • develop your English language skills, if necessary.

There are three entry points throughout the year, depending on your academic and English language levels, and which subjects you would like to study.

The IFP is subject to the same assessment procedures as the rest of the University and your tutors are the same academic staff that teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

As well as improving your knowledge and skills, the IFP aims to familiarise you with life at university and, if you are 17 or over, you will be eligible for accommodation on our beautiful award-winning campus. You will be assigned a personal tutor to help support and guide you through your studies. There are also social activities to take part in and new friends to meet.

If your confidence with English is quite low then the International Foundation and Language Programme (IFLP) is the perfect foundation programme for you. The IFLP is a full-time programme running from July to June each year. All students will complete eight weeks of language training and then join the International Foundation Programme (IFP) in September. All students will study "International English plus" and "Academic skills" and then, depending on your choice of degree, you will select two modules from a range of subjects such as Biology, English Literature and Mathematics for Finance, Economics and Business.

Key benefits of the IFP:

  • Full membership of the University of Reading with access to all of its academic, welfare, social and sports facilities
  • A specific social programme exclusive to IFP students that involves weekend trips around the UK and activities such as paintballing and bowling.
  • Teachers are academic members of the University with considerable experience of teaching international students
  • Completing the course successfully and meeting the grade requirements of your desired course pathway will guarantee you a place on an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Reading
  • Accepted by most other British universities for entry onto their degree courses
  • Seven month January start fast-track programme for business and law degrees
  • Attractive campus with guaranteed accommodation for IFP students
  • Highly supportive learning environment
  • Inclusive, international culture and friendly, caring community
  • One of the first courses of this type in the UK.
  • Full range of services to care for your health and wellbeing.
  • Easy access to London, Oxford and Heathrow airport.

IFP programmes start in January and September. IFLP programme starts in July.
