Nottingham, University of, MSci (Hons), Mathematical Physics

 United Kingdom
Year 1: Students gain a basic grounding in mechanics, including special relativity, electromagnetism, thermal physics and quantum theory, mathematical modelling, calculus, linear mathematics and mathematical reasoning, along with an introduction to computing using Matlab and Maple. Year 2: Students learn the core elements of the classic theories of physics: electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, optics and analytical mechanics; in parallel, students learn the mathematical language in which these theories are expressed: vector calculus, complex analysis, and Fourier analysis; in addition, students study numerical techniques for the solution of problems in physics. Year 3: Students choose from a wide range of topics which extend and apply the core theories and methods learned in the 1st 2 years and carry out a project in the general area of mathematical physics; MSci students choose from a narrower range of topics which extend the previous year's work and form a coherent preparation for 4th year topics; in addition, MSci students are given training in communication skills in preparation for the more student-centred approaches taken in some of the 4th year modules. Year 4: Students study advanced topics in theoretical physics including black holes, quantum field theory, modern quantum theory and condensed matter physics as well as carrying out a substantial project in mathematical physics.

Location

Considered as “one of Britain’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities” Nottingham is located in the East Midlands in the heart of England, less than two hours from London by train. The city boasts a large and diverse student population that is integral to the city itself. In addition to its impressive history and famous legends, Nottingham is a culturally diverse and vibrant city ideally suited towards student life.

The city's excellent transport links make it the ideal location from which to explore. Local, regional, national and international travel couldn't be easier from here. Furthermore, due to its variety of public transport and cycle routes, Nottingham has been named as the least car dependent city in the UK.

There are flights to an exciting range of national and international destinations from East Midlands Airport, one of the UK’s fastest growing airports. A number of budget airlines run services from East Midlands, which is only 40 minutes from Nottingham city centre on the 24 hour Skylink bus service.
