Year 1: Students are introduced to the range of disciplines within English, including English literature from its origins to the present day, modern English language, medieval studies (including old and middle English) and drama, through core modules; students can also try a range of subsidiary modules offered by other departments. Year 2: Core modules develop the 4 areas of English literature, language, medieval studies and drama; 2nd year study develops this introduction to include a module on literary theory. Year 3: Students may choose from a wide range of specialist modules; module options offered in the past have included single-author studies, genre studies and period studies in literature, topics in language such as sociolinguistics or English language teaching and work on performance and theatre, all giving them the chance to study in smaller groups with an expert in the field; students also have the opportunity of writing a dissertation on a subject of their choice.
