Phase 1: Clinical skills: clinical and communication skills are developed in a structured way; medical sciences: integrated, interdisciplinary modules; applied subjects like pathology, microbiology and pharmacology are introduced; social and behavioural medicine: social and psychological dimensions to patients’ lives that affect the kind of illness that they suffer, how they react to illness and the consequences of illness for them; learning how to learn: self-directed learning skills; learning to integrate: clinical conditions studied with the help of a mentor, who will be a practising doctor; students find and study suitable patients to prepare a dissertation linking basic medical science to real patients’ problems; people and disease module; rational practice: students learn to assess scientific evidence and design of studies by studying a discipline in depth. Phase 2: Clinical attachments in hospitals and the community as part of the primary care team; students collate a portfolio of written patient studies; elective: medical project which can be anywhere in the world; additional clinical practice where students shadow the PRHO, whose post they will fill from August.
