Year 1: French: Understanding contemporary France; French language; and options such as: textual analysis, twentieth century French literature; and civilisation Française. German: Culture and history; and language courses covering both written and spoken German, including a module on German phonetics; beginners in German receive an intensive course which eliminates the gap between them and the post-GCSE/A-level students as rapidly as possible. Year 2: optional modules on a variety of cultural, linguistic and literary topics, including: interpreting; Bande dessinée; introduction to Francophonie; French cinema; students also choose between further modules in German language and modern German culture; students may also opt to study a TESOL module (the teaching of English to speakers of other languages) in preparation for work abroad in the 3rd year. Year 3: Study abroad: normally divided between universities in France and Germany; students may opt to spend the whole year in either France, Germany or Austria as an English language assistant in a school; there is also the possibility of spending the year in Québec; students may also, make alternative arrangements for the year abroad, subject to the approval of the Head of School. Year 4: a wide range of options on French literature, history and culture which may include: interpreting; French cinema; immigration and ethnicity in colonial and postcolonial France; life writing; gender and power in contemporary France; students also take modules in German language and modern German culture and history; students also choose to replace 1 of the options with a dissertation.
