This degree is for students interested in culture and society how people live, understand, and interact within particular environments and how international development is affected by different cultures on the one hand and affects social transformation on the other. Students taking the degree will explore all aspects of cultural diversity (different economies; types of social organisation; kinship, marriage and descent patterns; ritual and belief systems) alongside the local impacts of the different aspects of international development (economic growth, social and cultural transformation).
Students will have the opportunity to draw on other disciplines within the School of International Development (e.g. economics, geography, politics) to better understand how development policy and practice can be improved through anthropological engagement. Students will develop practical skills in key anthropological methods whilst developing their interest in specific subject areas, both within the School of International Development (e.g. gender, education, health) and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (material culture). Students will also have the opportunity to learn a language (e.g. French, Spanish, Portuguese) and to participate in an ethnographic film-making workshop. The degree is invaluable for those wishing to make a difference to international development.
