University of Dundee, BDes (Hons), Jewellery and Metal Design

This course involves a comprehensive introduction to workshop practice and the design processes relating to jewellery and metal design; an analytical approach to materials and techniques is common to all set projects that gradually allow students to develop personal themes in order to express competently their individual designs; the course encourages innovation and excellence relevant to all design processes, production techniques and market opportunities within the context of jewellery and metal design; the development of small product design, as well as fashion-based design, has been integrated into the course; students are encouraged to develop a personal working philosophy and prepare themselves for a career within the national and international design world. Level 2: Learning design through making 1: introduces a broad foundation of knowledge and experience and develops a range of basic technical and practical skills; learning design through making 2: develops visual skills and an appreciation of the relevance of visual research and investigation and develops skills required for presentation of ideas and creative work; learning design through making 3: develops a range of technical and practical knowledge and visual awareness and a professional approach to design matters; computer-aided design (CAD): an introduction to computer-aided design; design history, theory and practice: historical and contemporary review. Level 3: theory and professional practice: encourages maturity and development through innovation and excellence and develops a high level of technical competence to carry out unsupervised workshop procedures; computer-aided design; overseas study trip; optional European or international student exchange; design history, theory and practice: design futures and professional practice. Level 4: degree project and mission: encourages the development of a working personal philosophy and preparation for a career in the world of design, and nurtures the development of individual approaches in the language of aesthetics, design concepts and research methods; design history, theory and practice: design dissertation and research outcomes in history, theory and practice.

Location

University of Dundee is located in Dundee, a city in Scotland. Dundee is situated beside a broad estuary of the River Tay surrounded by hills and farmland.


The city is dominated by the basalt plug of an extinct volcano, called Dundee Law. If one climbs 571 feet, one will be rewarded with fantastic views of the city and its surroundings. Dundee is south-facing and is Scotland's sunniest city. The climate is mild and snowfalls are rare. Lovers of the great outdoors will find that Dundee has a lot to offer all year round, both on land and water. Famous river fishing and golf courses are nearby, and an hour's drive will take one to magnificent mountains perfect for climbing, hiking, skiing or even snowboarding.


Dundee is called the City of Discovery and there's certainly plenty to discover. For example, Scott of the Antarctic's ship - RRS Discovery, built in Dundee - and the early 19th century warship, The Unicorn. There are good connections with the rest of the UK by train, coach and motorway. There are daily flights from Dundee airport to London City, Birmingham and Belfast. Edinburgh International airport, an hour away by motorway, provides a wider choice of destinations.
