The course begins with studio techniques, covering a wide range of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional drawing methods, and gives students an introduction to the 4 main craft areas: embroidered textiles; constructed textiles; ceramics; printed textiles; at all stages students are encouraged to be innovative and creative; the aim is to develop their design skills and build their confidence in manipulating materials as preparation for the undergraduate programme; students gain experience in handling materials such as yarn, clay and fabrics and develop drawing and design skills, exploring the use of colour, texture, form and surface design; in term 3 students work on a major project incorporating many of the skills they have learnt; their work is assessed in the form of a portfolio interview allowing them to develop presentational skills.
