In year 1 the course gives students the opportunity to work with ceramics and print and they also take a module which introduces them to the teaching of art and design in the primary school; in years 2, 3 and 4, as well as the taught modules, students are able to make informed choices for their studio practice in which they able to pursue areas of interest in more depth, with the close support of their tutors. Year 1: Professional studies; English; mathematics; science and information technology; teaching studies plus 1 day per week in school; 4 week teaching placement; courses in main subject. Year 2: professional studies; National Curriculum subjects; personal and social education; teaching studies plus 1 day per week in school for 10 weeks; cross curricular approaches; 5 week teaching placement; 2 modules from main subject. Year 3: professional studies; English; mathematics; science; teaching studies plus 1 day per week in school for 8 weeks; special educational needs; 8 week teaching placement; 2 modules from main subject. Year 4: professional studies; elective; curriculum co-ordination and 1 day per week in school; 3 week teaching in school; at least 4 modules from main subject. Main subject Part 1: Courses in art and design exploring both practical studies in the studios with related art theory. Part 2: turning points in 20th-Century art and design; independent art history topic; analytical and expressive figure drawing; nomination practical studies; history and theory of art and design; digital image creation and manipulation.
