The course provides a broad perspective of work with young children (0 to 8 years) and their families, with a strong focus on the study of child development and the nature of childhood; the course develops skills in the study of childhood from psychological, historical, cultural, sociological, social policy and philosophical viewpoints; it aims to gives students an understanding of the diverse contexts in which children develop and learn; students analyse the philosophies and value systems that underpin working with and caring for young children; as the course continues students revisit these topics in greater depth; this process is underpinned by placements in a variety of early years settings, including schools, nurseries, portage services, hospitals, sure start and family centres.
