Students pursue their own research programme, with the support of a supervisor and shadow supervisor, culminating in a thesis of 80,000 words which is examined for the award of the PhD degree; some students produce a thesis of 60,000 words, after 6 terms (2 years) of research, which is examined for the award of the MLitt degree; research topics within the following areas can usually be supervised: metaphysics; ethics; philosophy of mind; history of philosophy; theory of knowledge; aesthetics; political philosophy; philosophy of language; metaphysical ethics; moral psychology; philosophical logic; philosophy of mathematics; ancient philosophy; philosophy of science.
