The early stages of the course are primarily project based; towards the latter ½ of the course, the focus is more on students’ own ideas; in year 3, a major piece of work culminates in an exhibition and/or publication; practical skills are taught through a programme of instruction in workshops aligned to particular projects, including technical demonstrations in: camera use; lighting; monochrome; colour; analogue and digital processes; lectures, seminars and tutorials enable the study of photography in its cultural and historical contexts; professional practice sessions include talks and seminars given by guest speakers who are practising photographers or professionals concerned with commissioning, publishing or exhibiting photography; in year 2 students choose an extension study from the faculty programme enabling collaboration with students from other disciplines; opportunities are available for students to travel and for exchanges with overseas institutions; students on the course have exhibited abroad and take part in organised study visits.
