On the degree programme, you’ll study a total of 11 modules over three years. There are 10 single modules and a double module, Law in Action. These ensure you get a firm grounding in the areas of law that are most useful in legal practice. The Law in Action module is a choice and it allows you to choose from two routes – Law and Individuals or Law and Businesses – depending on the career route that you think you might want to pursue.
Legal Essentials
Legal Essentials module consists of three elements. Firstly, the Legal System section will examine why we have laws, what forms they take, who makes them and how they change. You will learn about the growing diversity of legal services and the rules and ethics of providing those services.
Contract Law
In common real-life scenarios, you’ll learn the main principles of formation, formalities, express and implied terms, obligations, termination and remedies for breach of contract.
Tort
You will examine in a practical context the coverage of the general tortious principles: negligence, damages, defences and contributory negligence.
EU Law
Real-life case studies will help you learn how EU law deals with the institutions, general principles, sources and areas of regulation of the European Union and its relationship with national law.
Criminal Law
Fictional commonplace contexts will help you understand the major offences, including those against the person and theft, along with defences and basic criminal penalties.
Property Law
Property Law involves study of the various types of estates and interests in land, including easements, covenants, joint ownership, registered and unregistered title and mortgages.
Equity/Trusts
You’ll learn in a practical context the nature and uses of various types of trust, formation, fiduciary relationships, rights and obligations, along with remedies for breach of trust.
Public Law
Public law covers the study of the law relating to the UK constitution and the legal framework in which the Government and Parliament operate, including the relationship between individuals and regulatory actions and decisions.
Transactions
Through common practical examples you’ll learn how a lawyer is involved in properly establishing legal relationships, recording their obligations and benefits and examining other issues like termination of relationships, allocating risk and providing remedies. The links between transactions and actions will also be examined, including dispute avoidance.
Actions/Evidence
This module focuses on resolving disputes. You’ll learn how a lawyer works out the causes of disputes and the personal, business, commercial and financial aims of those individuals or organisations involved. You’ll then learn how to establish and compare the legal position of the parties in dispute, and evaluate their likely chances of success or failure. Real-life scenarios will help you explore the role and rules of evidence in resolving disputes, the concept of resolving disputes equitably, plus jurisdiction and governing law.
Law in Action modules
Law in Action modules allow you to choose from two routes – Law and Individuals or Law and Businesses – depending on the career route that you think you might want to pursue. You’ll get the chance to choose between modules that will show you how the law affects either the individual or business and, in the process, understand that a number of areas of law can come into play at the same time.
