Course aims to prepare students to address in their work some of the factors that contribute to environmentally non-sustainable aspects of the industry; course is designed for those already employed in, or aiming to enter employment relating to, production, regulation and development aspects of aquaculture; on completion of the course, students should be able to understand the range of aquaculture systems utilised in the United Kingdom and around the world, identify specific areas for improvement in terms of their environmental sustainability, and be able to initiate a process of change; the content of the course includes taught (100 credits), literature review (20 credits) and individual original research project (60 credits) elements; through the taught modules, students are introduced to the principles and practices of different forms of aquaculture, to key industry-standard protocols for environmental monitoring and to relevant regulatory frameworks; they are taught the skills necessary to complete a rigorous piece of research of their choice of relevance to the environmental sustainability of aquaculture; a field trip abroad (currently in Tenerife) and placements at the Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture Research (CSAR) and at the Freshwater Research Unit (FRU) are an essential part of the course.
