Japanese Year 1: The programme accommodates absolute beginners as well as those with some knowledge of Japanese; absolute beginners are placed in J1- elementary Japanese, and students who know some Japanese may be allocated, after a placement test, to J-1 accelerated elementary japanese. Year 2: Students take 2 units of Japanese language, and the remaining units from their other subject. Year 3: This is a compulsory year spent in Japan for both single and 2-subject degree students, and there is no tuition offered by the department; students are expected to take the equivalent of 4 units in this year at a Japanese university. Year 4: 2 subject degree students have no compulsory units in year 4 but are encouraged to undertake an extended essay or an independent study project. Linguistics Year 1: General linguistics; introduction to grammatical structure; they also take 2 units from their other subject. Year 2: Introduction to phonology; topics in lexical semantics; or, language and meaning 1; they also take a half unit from the list of options in linguistics and 2 units from their other subject. Year 3: Intermediate phonology; intermediate syntax.
