This course covers literature, language, film studies, and creative writing; in literature students study contemporary texts and works from previous centuries including Shakespeare’s plays and Romantic poetry; thematic approaches address topics such as identity, children’s literature and gothicism; in language, students analyse the ways in which meanings are conveyed in a range of spoken and written texts; they explore connections between language and other socio-cultural issues such as class, race and gender; language modules encompass topics as diverse as the rules of conversation; language and gender; language and learning; the language of humour and the language of advertising; in the creative writing modules, a range of narrative and poetic techniques are explored; students also have the opportunity to work on script and on some non-fictional narrative forms such as autobiography, travel writing and journalism.
