InnoEnergy, MSc, Energy Transition

 Netherlands

The two-year MSc Energy Transition programme gives you a systematic, in-depth understanding of critical topics like clean combustion technologies, alternative fuels, biomass, gasification, waste to energy and renewables. You will be ready to assess the sustainability, operational efficiency, environmental impact, life-cycle, availability and safety of different energy systems. As a result, you will play a key role in the implementation of circular economy strategies and policies within an organisation, company or as an entrepreneur.

The transformation process of thousands of fossil based installations is just beginning.

The MSc  Energy Transition empower you with a deep understanding of technology transition and decommissioning, low environmental impact energy systems, new generation of chemical fuels and heating systems including smart grids. The programme also explores how to improve existing installations to lower their environmental impact.

You emerge with the expertise and the tools to significantly improve the ecological footprint of companies in sectors like cement and coal. And to become a leader in closing the loops in the energy sector today and tomorrow.

Two strategic locations in Europe.

Some of Europe’s most advanced installations working in energy transition are located in Poland. The Jaworzno III Coal-fired Power Plant has the highest energy efficiency percentage in the world, while Poland is also home to range of plants, which have transitioned from coal-based energy to 100% biomass. The MSc Energy Transition gives you access to the experts behind these innovations – some of Europe’s foremost thinkers in the energy transition space.

Portugal is a pioneer in entrepreneurship within the European Union. To start your own business here, all you need is a StartUP visa and there are no capital requirements. The MSc Energy Transition gives you access to InnoEnergy projects and coaching from professional business developers.

Moreover, the estimated living costs per country are 500 EUR in Poland and 625 EUR in Portugal. This ensures that you get the best value-for-money in Europe next to low crime rates.

You can start your MSc Energy Transition journey in October or in March.

Year 1

During the first year, we build your core knowledge and understanding of the essential pillars of energy engineering, energy systems and chemical fuels. You can choose to study at one of two top-ranked European universities:  AGH: University of Science and Technology in Krakow or SUT: Silesian University of Technology, in Gliwice, Poland.

Year 2

In year 2 you dive deeper into your topic of interest. You can choose to specialise in energy conversion, renewable energy, fuels or energy efficiency and pursue a range of elective courses to sharpen your expertise in the areas that most interest you. All students study at IST: Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Summer school

You will also take an intensive ‘Entrepreneur in a week’ course at the Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics in Portugal. Here you build critical managerial and entrepreneurial skills with modules that cover business and economics, project management and planning. You emerge with a solid understanding of modern business practice in the energy sector.

Industrial internship

You will have the opportunity to undertake a two-month industrial internship during your second year to build practical technological and business-orientated knowledge and skills. You choose the type of  internship and host organisation that best meets your particular interests and objectives.

Your Master’s thesis

Towards the end of your second year, you will undertake your Master’s thesis, with a strong focus on finding innovative solutions relevant to your field of study. Working on your thesis gives you privileged access to some of the most prestigious companies, research centres and installations in Europe. Their experts become mentors for your research.

Your thesis corresponds to five months of full-time study and is worth 30 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits (ECTS).

Complementary training

During the two-year programme, you have the opportunity to participate in project management training courses, leading to a valuable and industry-recognised PRINCE 2 qualification.

Additional workshops also focus on personal skills and professional development including creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, public speaking, leadership, and self-presentation.
