Stage 1 (year 1): Induction workshop (expectations of DBA study and overview); management research, modes and theories; research paradigms; reviewing the literature and developing issues from the literature; research writing; action enquiry; introduction to qualitative research: data collection; analysing qualitative research; preparing for fieldwork; reflexivity; presentation of draft research proposals and feedback; research interviews and focus groups; techniques for analysing the data; writing critically; case studies; grounded theory; final preparation for first cycle; stages 2 and 3: attendance is minimal in stages 2 and 3, usually involving 3 workshops each year with face-to-face tutorials and online support; students continue to carry out action research in their own companies, reflecting on their actions and primary research activities in order to develop theoretical principles as well as recommendations for professional practice; the final output is a written thesis which is defended in an oral viva.
