Years 3 and 4: 4 modules (3 thematic modules and a documents based module) from over 30 topics, including: approaching death in ancient Greece and Rome; colonial encounters: race, identity and cultural change in the British empire; gender in the middle ages; other peoples in Greek and Roman thought; religious and political space in the classical and Hellenistic world; responses to Rome from the 18th century to the present; the cultural history of early modern Venice; the English family c. 1350-1720; the making of the modern racial order in South Africa; the war of ideas in post-revolutionary England 1660-1740; witchcraft and society 1450-1750; the Ottoman empire; imperialism in modern east Asia; contested nation: Germany 1871-1918; the age of science: the transformation of European life, 1850-1939; people and society: a social history of Venice (1450-1650); living in the middle ages; the Athenian empire; religion, magic and society in late antiquity; France 1774-1794: reform and revolution; later medieval London 1450-1560: community, politics and religion; literature, culture and society in Britain, 1914-1945; popular culture in American history, 1870 to the present; the age of plague: disease, medicine and society in western Europe, 1348-1665; the idea of civil society from the 18th to the 20th century; terror, war and late Stalinism: soviet Russia 1934-1953 (not all modules are available every year); year 3 also contains bibliographical training aimed at enabling you to prepare your dissertation (to be completed in year 4).

Location

Study in the heart of central London. Birkbeck is located in Bloomsbury, the traditional academic centre of London. World-class research resources, such as the British Library and the British Museum, are within a short walk of Birkbeck. London’s many attractions, including the West End, European’s longest shopping street and the lively bars and restaurants of Soho, are all within walking distance of Birkbeck.
