The research ranges from investigations of novel architectures and protocols to applications of advanced coding techniques in the area of mobile 3rd generation networks; advanced algorithms for improving network efficiency; and the design and development of dynamic hardware to improve performance; techniques often involve the design of advanced digital systems for application-specific embedded systems; the group uses field-programmable gate array hardware to examine physical implementations of these principles; the group has active links with the Photonics Research Group; the Neural Computing Research Group; and the Biomedical Engineering Research Group involving a range of theoretical and experimental research and sensor network applications.

The Aston University campus is located on a green 60 acre, self contained site in the centre of Birmingham, within 5-10 minutes walk of the main shopping, business and entertainment areas of the city.
