Our pre-master’s courses help you meet the entry requirements for postgraduate courses. They will give you the confidence, the language skills and the academic preparation you need to succeed from the moment you start your postgraduate degree. Once you enroll you will have a guaranteed pathway to an Oxford Brookes master’s degree if you pass with the required grades.
If you want to experience British university life before your degree, or you have had a break from education for several years, taking a pre-master’s course will provide you with a perfect transition to studying at master’s level.
Who should take a pre-master's course?
Take a pre-master's course if:
- your qualifications are not at the required level for postgraduate study
- you want to take a master's degree in a different subject from your undergraduate degree
- you need to improve your study skills or academic English
- you have not studied for some time and want extra preparation
- you want to become more confident before your master's
Which pre-master's course to choose?
Your choice of course will depend on your English language skills, your subject knowledge and your academic study skills.
- Pre-Master's Diploma - from IELTS 5.5 (Sept and Jan start)
24-week course to improve your subject knowledge, study skills and academic English - Two-Year Master's Programme - from IELTS 5.5 (Sept and Jan start)
Combines the Pre-Master's Diploma with your chosen master's degree with just one visa and one application required - you will graduate with a full British master's degree - Pre-Master's Certificate: English Language and Study Skills - from IELTS 6.0 (Jan and May start)
12-week course to improve your subject knowledge, study skills and academic English
Our courses last either a whole academic year or just one semester depending on your needs and the requirements of your master’s.
Modules
You will take modules in the following subjects in order to enhance your study skills and prepare you fully for your master’s degree.
Reading and research
- Learn to undertake research and locate appropriate materials from a variety of sources
- Practise comprehension, note taking, critical thinking, reasoning and self-reflection skills
- Learn to assess the credibility and validity of sources
Academic writing and extended writing project
- Learn to write a case study, essay or report
- Learn how to develop a persuasive argument
- Develop your planning, pre-writing, brainstorming and editing skills
- Produce an in-depth research project in your academic field
Seminar skills
- Improve your speaking and listening skills in group presentations and lectures
- Learn to engage effectively in critical discussions
- Develop your presentation skills
You will also take one or two final year undergraduate modules in your chosen subject so you become familiar with the British classroom environment.

- A bachelor’s degree
- IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
- Applicants who do not meet the language requirements may apply for our pre-sessional University English course from IELTS 4.5
Our two semester pre-master’s courses begin in September and January. Our one semester courses begin in January and September. The application deadlines for each entry point are below:

Location
The campuses are filled with bars, cafes, and food outlets so there are plenty of places for you to meet up with friends, have fun and socialise.
We even organise regular cultural events, like theatre visits and traditional dance evenings, to help you experience life in the UK. Our events are a great way of meeting other students from across the University.
Getting you from A to B quickly and cheaply, the Brookes Bus service links all three campuses with the halls of residence, Oxford city centre and local supermarkets. Free Brookes bus passes are available to students.
