The course develops creative ability and technical skills as a preparation for professional practice; industrial experience is gained through live projects supported by local industries and further informed by visits to design studios, manufacturing companies and retail outlets; an optional placement year after level 2 is available to those students, wishing to gain further experience by working in industry; the study of history and theory is an integral part of the course and covers historical, contemporary and social issues, and encourages critical awareness and judgement; the options within the course are encompassed in the disciplines of textiles, printed and woven, and fashion with knit; these closely related disciplines allow a rich variety of studies that include designing for fashion fabrics, fashion garments and accessories, fabrics and surfaces for interiors; a range of options within each of the modules is offered to ensure the various discipline pathways are delivered; a comprehensive business and marketing lecture/seminar programme and practical technical studies including computer-aided design, enhance the understanding of the textiles and fashion disciplines.
