The motor sports sector is continually growing, proving not only extremely popular but also highly commercial and profitable; motor sports engineering generates about £3 billion pounds a year in the UK alone; this new course is designed for those who want to develop mechanical engineering skills which will be applicable to the motor sports industry; in addition students obtain entrepreneurial and management skills valued in the sector or in order to run their own motor sports company; during the course of their degree, students form part of the University of Sheffield Motor Sports Company; this company will be set up in the department to run alongside their course; in the 1st 2 years, students have the opportunity to obtain a motor sports association (MSA) national competition licence, and gain experience in running motor sports related activities; in the 3rd year, as part of a group project, students, amongst other activities, are able to design racing car components and develop racing cars; in the last year, students contribute to motor sports events, helping in development, organisation and running events, or alternatively being part of a consultancy team, which will provide advice to other motor sports teams.
