The course covers in chronological order the writing from the Renaissance to today, offering a grounding in the unfolding development of English literature; there are also courses on Drama and Film on offer, and a range of optional modules; of the five level one modules, two are compulsory: introduction to advanced literary studies (IALS) and the Renaissance; IALS is designed to make students rethink the study of poetry, narrative, drama, film and literary theory; Renaissance drama considers the dynamic period of Shakespeare; 3 optional modules concern drama, film studies and literary practice; at levels 2 and 3, the chronological survey continues over 5 modules, modules dedicated to literary theory and optional modules that might focus on a single author, genre or theme, a literary movement, or on practical drama or film; most reflect their tutors' research interests, such as Henry James, Irish literature, the gay novel, twentieth-century poetry, working-class writing, the Holocaust or Shakespeare on screen. Hispanic studies A third of teaching time is devoted to developing students’ written and oral fluency in Spanish, supported by small-group learning on a weekly basis and by language laboratory, video and satellite TV facilities as well as weekly classes with native speakers; level 1 provides a grounding in the language, culture, history and society of Spain and Latin America; all single Honours students take Portuguese or Catalan, and these are also available to suitably qualified dual Honours students; levels 2 and 3 offer very broad coverage of diverse aspects of Spanish and Latin American society, history and culture, including film, music, literature, art and sport; level 3 also includes practice-based modules in interpreting, translating and musical performance; language learning remains central, but otherwise students have a choice of optional modules; there are several year abroad options in Spain and Latin America, and there are potential placements with the British Council's language-teaching assistantship schemes in Spain and Latin America.
