This degree ranges widely in its study of western art music (or classical music); in many different ways it encompasses performing music, composing music or arranging it (on paper or electronically), and discussing it in its historical and modern contexts; the programme makes provision for the optional study of aspects of popular music and offers several modules that explore themes and issues common to popular and classical repertoires; in each year, eight units are taken; these are expressed as a series of modules; some modules are practical, concerned with musical performance; others concern musical notation in connection with original composition, style composition (harmony), arrangement or orchestration; many modules of the same type form continuous sequences; for example, the orchestra in year 1 can progress to orchestration modules in years 2 and 3; our studios cater for both classical and popular musical styles; the remaining modules generally involve writing about music from a historical, cultural, critical or analytical viewpoint.
