Study mode Start date Duration
Full-time n/a years: 3
Classical studies focuses on the societies and cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome; students study their literary and visual cultures (including their art and architecture) against the backdrop of the history of the period, and you also have the opportunity to study Greek or Latin; though not compulsory, language modules are an excellent way of furthering their knowledge of the ancient world, and of adding to the skills developed throughout the degree; In year 1 of this degree, a core group of modules, covering topics such as Greek myth and society, Latin epic poetry, living in ancient Rome, and ancient visual culture, provide students with a solid introduction to the breadth of Greco-Roman society and culture, and help to develop the skills they require for later in-depth study; in addition, students may also study some Greek and Roman history, archaeology, or language modules (at the level appropriate to your experience); in years 2 and 3, students’ study of ancient culture can be shaped according to their personal interests, whether these are in literature, art, language, intellectual culture, or modern receptions of the ancient world; through a mixture of core and optional modules, students can study such diverse topics as women in antiquity, Greek art, film and the ancient world, Herodotus, and Roman personal poetry; in the final year, the dissertation will require students to undertake detailed and independent research into a topic of their choice.
