This degree offers the opportunity to study the archaeology, culture, society and history of the key civilisations of ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome and the near East, combined with training in the latest archaeology techniques and methodology; starting with a broad introduction to archaeological methods and the specific issues involved in dealing with ancient civilisations, students are introduced to the archaeology and history of Egypt, Greece, Rome and the ancient near East; in later years students study subjects central to our understanding of ancient civilisations: social and political organisation, art, religion and texts, combined with a detailed study of at least 2 civilisations (Egypt, Greece and Rome, or the near East); field and or museum based work is an integral part of the programme, and students will be encouraged to base their 3rd-year dissertations on topics related to relevant departmental field projects; such projects are currently based in Egypt, Jordan, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Italy.
