The Department of Economics at the University of Essex, which offers this course, was founded with the University in 1963. The Department provides, or has recently provided, homes, editors and associate editors for many leading journals including the Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Industrial Economics, International Economic Review, and the Review of Development Economics.

Careers in business and finance often require an economic approach. Our MSc Financial and Business Economics allows you to study the economic principles that are at the heart of finance and business, and to develop an awareness of their applications.

You investigate topics including:

  • Topics in corporate finance
  • How to raise funds to maintain the activity of a firm
  • Asset pricing algebra
  • Defining debt and equity
  • Modigliani-Miller irrelevance theorems

We are top 5 in the UK for research, with over 90% rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. Much of this world-class research is related to policy, and we have particular strengths in the areas of:

  • Game theory and strategic interactions
  • Theoretical and applied econometrics
  • Labour economics

The quality of our work is reflected in our stream of publications in high-profile academic journals, including American Economic Review, Econometrica, and Review of Economic Studies.

Structure of the course

A Masters course lasts for twelve months (full-time), starting in October, and consists of taught modules during your autumn and spring terms, and normally a research-based dissertation or other project-based work submitted in September.
