Studying economics provides you with a greater understanding of the world around you. It teaches you how the economy functions, how people make decisions, why an economic crisis occurs and what the different solutions are. Economics at Essex is not only about stocks, shares and financial markets; it is concerned with the material wellbeing of human societies.

This course gives you a thorough introduction to all aspects of economics, including micro and macroeconomics, and qualitative and mathematical research methods. Examine the decisions of individuals, the strategies of firms and the policies of individuals to understand and challenge the standard rules of economics.

You’ll study all of the major mainstream fields, but the course has particular strengths in the following areas:

  • Game theory and strategic interactions
  • Theoretical and applied econometrics
  • Labour economics

Placement year

You will be responsible for finding your placement, but with support and guidance provided by both your department and the University's Employability and Careers Centre.

Location

Essex is a county in the east of England and is situated to the east of London. From pretty villages set in peaceful surroundings to busy market towns steeped in history, from tranquil walks along wide sandy beaches to town centres brimming with history and culture, there is plenty on offer in the beautiful county of Essex.

Essex has excellent links by rail and road into central London. Trains run between central London and both Colchester and Southend taking up to an hour. The University's East 15 Acting School is approximately 45 minutes from central London on the London Underground Tube.
