This course gives students the opportunity to study the ways in which cinema has developed over the last hundred years or more, through contemporary and historical examples and through practical modules; students cover diverse kinds of cinema including Hollywood up to the contemporary period and national cinemas from Britain, Europe, China, Japan and the Third World; particular genres such as science fiction, horror and melodrama are explored in depth; students also discuss the role of cinema in the representation of gender and race; they explore the narrative forms of cinema in both theory and practical modules, and the study of the film narrative module in the 2nd year combines well with the script writing modules; there is a practical production double module in each year which allows students to reflect on the expressive forms of cinema such as lighting, the role of the soundtrack, scripting, shooting and editing.
