This course helps the student to develop skills and capabilities that enable them to pursue careers working with people, particularly with children, young people and/or families; this course enables the student to develop their ideas, opinions and beliefs about educational aims, policies and practice; the student studies a range of subjects including: law; philosophy; psychology; history; sociology; ethics; child development; theories of families; an exploration of the world of education; the student’s learning incorporates key skills and benchmarks laid down for generic Honours degree programmes; the programme aims to: provide informed, effective, multiprofessional staff for any agency that works with children, young people and families; develop the student’s intellectual and practical skills in disciplines relevant to education, children, young people and the family; enable the student to take increasing responsibility for their own learning, thus becoming a sound independent learner; teach the student career-management skills and open their eyes to employment opportunities in working with children, young people and families; importantly, the course also requires and enables the student to develop perspectives on their own experiences as a learner and to relate their understanding to accepted theories; the student can progress to postgraduate teacher training or any area of graduate employment that involves management, development and implementation of policy, or analysis of information and social situations, not only teaching, social work and family liaison, but also related fields such as educational psychology or community and youth work; this course is taught at the Lancaster campus.
