The degree introduces a range of theories and perspectives in order to explore the relationship between the individual and society; it focuses upon notions of equality, diversity and difference, particularly in the context of understanding behaviour, health and illness; as an academic discipline, sociology helps to develop an understanding of broader social issues, problems and processes, addressing phenomena such as social class, gender, race, risk and globalisation; psychology develops an appreciation of the ways in which individuals negotiate their ways through, and make sense of, complex modern societies, addressing issues such as identity, attitudes, prejudice, mental health and illness, gender, sexuality and the body, and health.
