This programme is ideal for the Russian-speaking students who wish to gain a professional qualification in interpreting and translating from their native language (Russian) into English and vice versa. It is designed to prepare linguists for careers as professional interpreters and/or translators. It has done this most successfully over more than four decades, and graduates are to be found working in language services throughout the world.
All students follow a core programme involving professional translation and simultaneous, consecutive and public service interpreting or liaison/public service interpreting. A number of options are available in the second semester to allow students to further focus on their translation or interpreting skills.
The MA is awarded for a 15,000-word dissertation/project submitted after successful completion of the taught programme.
The MA Interpreting & Translating is a highly vocational programme with a worldwide reputation for training professional translators and conference interpreters.
The graduates have excellent employment prospects. While some have found rewarding jobs in smaller companies and institutions, or chosen to remain as a freelancer, many have gone on to pursue stimulating careers as professional translators and interpreters with major international organisations.
Graduates have worked for the following organisations:

Bath is located in the south-west of England, one and a half hours from London by train. It is an interesting, elegant and vibrant city and one of only three in the world to be on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. With a population of only around 90,000, Bath is friendly and compact.
Bath is home to several excellent museums and galleries, and hosts various arts festivals throughout the year. There are numerous restaurants, cafés and pubs and a great range of shopping with high street stores, small specialist shops and a flea market. The city offers many enjoyable outdoor activities. One can take a boat trip on the River Avon, relax in one of the delightful parks or make use of the superb sports facilities. Bath is surrounded by magnificent countryside and interesting places. Stonehenge, Salisbury, Wells, Glastonbury, Cheddar Gorge, Oxford and Bristol are all within easy reach of Bath.
The university is located about a mile from Bath. Frequent bus services link the campus, city and major student residential areas, so students are always connected to work, home and social life when studying.
