This degree investigates contemporary graphic illustration as a means of communicating ideas and their meanings; the degree combines both traditional and electronic media in the execution of ideas and illustration proposals; diverse and stimulating projects explore a variety of graphic illustration devices, including iconography, sequential imagery and narrative illustration; the degree has a strong professional approach and equips students with the knowledge and expertise to operate effectively as a practising graphic designer or illustrator; lectures and demonstrations set the scene for activities and project work undertaken individually or in groups; delivered as a series of modules that cover the technical, creative and contextual aspects of graphic design and illustration, all of which are taught in response to personal and career ambitions; there are 6 modules taught in the 1st and 2nd years, with 3 double modules making up the 3rd year of study; all students follow the same basic curriculum, but with considerable freedom to tune individual studies to follow their special interests and abilities within the subject; students are encouraged to investigate and liaise with all areas of the graphic design industry in order to contextualise study and support and promote future career aspirations; there are opportunities for internships, industry-based visits and projects which can be credited as part of the course; application deadline: March 2010.
