This is a joint Honours programme which allows the student to study 2 subjects in equal proportions; the education and employment course focuses on the nature and purposes of education and how people learn; it considers the value of education to future employment, leisure and life ambitions; additionally, the programme is developing a strong community focus to reflect current policy debates and government initiatives aimed at social inclusion, such as every child matters and community cohesion; a varied range of modules allow the student to focus on critical issues relating to employment, education and the community and considers fundamental questions concerning the aims and values of education and their relationship to society; it not only gives the student an understanding of personal development and successful career advancement but also provides them with transferable managerial skills for their own future employment; there may be a range of module choices at all 3 levels specifically designed for those interested in pursuing a teaching career which includes a teaching skills module and school work experience at level 3; the course provides the student with knowledge and skills that are valuable in a wide variety of careers and occupations; the psychology course provides the student with a scientific understanding of mind, brain and behaviour, and of the complex interactions among these factors that determine the human condition and experience; alongside the academic content of the programme the student gains transferable skills; the student develops a capacity for self-directed, reflective learning and project management, characterised by: planning; effective use of a variety of cognitive and practical skills; self-evaluation; effective problem-solving in response to identified need.
