This course is an intensive introduction to the history of Western art for those with little or no background in the subject; students begin with Egyptian antiquities in the British Museum and end with contemporary art at Tate Modern; through London's museums and galleries and excursions to a rich variety of English collections the programme covers painting; sculpture; architecture and decorative art and the development of the art market; it also covers techniques and materials; patronage and the display of collections; as well as religious and political contexts for stylistic development, and issues of quality and value related to art objects; a trip to Rome to study its classical and Baroque art treasures complements the programme's regular excursions.
