The course is comprised of 2 complementary strands: School-based training and centre-based taught sessions; right from the start students are in a classroom environment, acquiring the knowledge, skills and understanding required for effective teaching; all the training on the course revolves around work in school where students are regarded as additional, trainee members of staff; students develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of teaching and learning in mathematics; they are prepared to teach across the whole range of the school mathematics curriculum from 11 to 16, the core components of A-level mathematics and at least 1 area of applied mathematics; this involves knowledge of the content, recommended teaching approaches and assessment requirements for the National Strategy and the National Curriculum for mathematics; students learn to use relevant literature, research and educational theories relating to teaching mathematics and the wider curriculum; they learn about the wider role of teachers in school, apply and develop their skills and knowledge on school placements and develop their skills of evaluation and critical reflection; the taught part of the programme is based at St Mary Magdalene Academy in Islington.
