All science trainees must specialise in at least one of biology, chemistry and physics; the course aims to help students become efficient, effective, competent and professionally aware science teachers; acquire practical classroom skills, using a range of media; understand pupils' achievements and difficulties and to respond sympathetically to their individual needs; select, produce and use a wide variety of science teaching materials; develop a successful teaching style; maintain and extend competence in the subject; to these ends students are presented with and encouraged to adopt a range of strategies drawing upon current science teaching techniques, research, inspection findings and applications of new technology; the course leads to recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
