The course aims to equip students with the design skills relevant to the demands of the contemporary design industry; these skills can be divided into three main areas: traditional graphic design skills such as typography, composition and layout, visual presentation techniques etc; information technology skills based on use of the design industry standard computer Apple Mac and design related software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design; the thinking skills necessary to undertake the design process, from taking a 'brief' through ideas generation and concept development to client presentation; students make a number of design-related educational visits throughout the course; students will undertake several 'live' briefs set by visiting designers; there will also be the opportunity to enter design competitions; work placements are organised by students but with direction from a relevant member of the lecturing team.
