Students on this course engage with a number of established disciplines such as criminology, sociology, history, politics, social policy, law, public management and psychology, in order to contextualise criminal behaviour and view it from a social scientific perspective; taking into account many themes such as social class, race, gender and sexuality, students learn to analyse crime and criminal behaviour as social problems; students relate theoretical debate to substantive concerns such as legislation, policy and practice in criminal justice and the management of crime; students focus on crime and criminal justice in Scotland and the UK, as well as in the broader context of European culture and global politics, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage in the critical, analytical and comparative study of crime and criminal justice; the programme allows students to define and assess the extent of an individual's criminal responsibility by looking at their rights, duties and obligations to other members of society; this perspective is combined with the study of law providing opportunity to consider the punishments imposed by the criminal justice system, consider their impact, and evaluate their value in rehabilitating offenders and preventing further criminal behaviour.
