The literature half of the programme focuses on English literature and drama from the late 19th century to the present day but also features Shakespeare within its core provision; students have the opportunity to study literary texts on the Gothic, the colonial and post colonial, science fiction, women's writing, Scottish and Irish literature and political fiction as well as theoretical approaches to literature; during their study students consider how literature is read and interpreted in the modern world, including adaptations of novels and plays in the media of film and television; the journalism half of the degree is primarily aimed at producing effective and reflective practitioners who can compete for employment in the fast-changing media industries as the digital revolution unfolds; it should also appeal to those who wish to study the evolution and impact of journalism in its wider political, ethical, cultural and historical contexts; after receiving instruction in the core skills of print, broadcast and online skills, students are encouraged to undertake an industry placement, either on a newspaper, magazine, broadcast station or website; more theoretical modules also enable them to understand the crucial and complex role of the news media in modern society.
