The course is modular; with a major illustration module forming the spine of each of the three years' study; a distinctive feature of the first and second years is a module offering the opportunity to negotiate and self-direct work; thus enabling students to bias their portfolio towards areas of interest; or to explore less familiar aspects of the discipline; conventional representational techniques are taught alongside new areas such as 3D illustration and animation; in addition, traditional print-making facilities are available and integrated into assignment work; as is the opportunity to pursue alternative methods such as photocopying and digital imagery; students are encouraged to consider the nature of illustration as a fundamental aspect of their studies; and to question and redefine the role of illustration and text in all project work; lectures and presentations focus on staff expertise including areas such as politics; satire; narrative; history and traditions.
