This is a making based course, spanning approaches to the 2 materials from product design to sculpture; it is taught by practising artists and designers who are specialists in these materials; it equips graduates to start their own businesses or gain employment in designer or maker workshops and studios; allows students to develop their own research in either material, or in both; from the second year onwards; combines the development of an individual’s visual judgement and visual imagination with the development of a professional level of craft skill; students are introduced to the range of craft skills appropriate to creating artefacts in ceramics or glass in the 1st year; in the 2nd year this strong practical understanding allows them to begin to make choices as to their individual personal direction as an artist or designer or maker; and also to decide whether they are more suited to a career in glass or ceramics, or if they wish to continue studying across a broad making base; work placements and exchanges take place in the 2nd 1/2 of year 2; the 3rd year relates serious contextual study directly to each individual studio practice and introduces students to other outside practicing artists and designers, through professional studies.
