Utrecht University

Student life

Utrecht is a 30 minutes' by train from Schiphol (Amsterdam) international airport. The public transport network across the Netherlands is clean and efficient. Besides, getting around Utrecht by bus is easy but most students cycle.

Studying at Utrecht University means studying in a vibrant city with a good atmosphere and an active student life. Student organisations are an important part of the student life in Utrecht. There are over 150 student organisations in Utrecht, including organisations for hobbies and interests, social associations, sports clubs and orchestras.

Students of the UCU study, live, eat and spend their leisure time mainly within the complex. This attractive site includes many distinctive buildings and is located between the Utrecht Science Park/De Uithof and Utrecht city centre. There are many opportunities for other activities alongside studying. For example, there is plenty of space on campus for theatre, singing, sports, debating, etc. At Parnassos Cultural Centre, students can take courses in music, theatre, photography, the expressive arts, dance, and much more.

Accommodation

Finding accommodation in Utrecht can be quite a challenge. Utrecht is one of the most popular university towns in the Netherlands, and the demand for student housing is very high. It is therefore absolutely necessary to start looking for accommodation as soon as possible. The university does not own any student accommodation. Most rooms are let by housing corporations and by private home owners. A typical aspect of student housing in the Netherlands is that you rent a room in a flat or house where you live with other students and share facilities like the kitchen, bathroom and washing machine.

The reserved accommodation is not cheap, but it is convenient and comfortable: fully furnished, and utilities such as internet, water, gas and heating are included in the rent. For Erasmus and exchange students, it is a pleasant way to live with fellow exchange students during your stay abroad.

The University Facilities Centre is responsible for providing facility services at Utrecht University, such as catering, room hire, cleaning, waste removal, post and transport, building care and maintenance.

The cost of living, including room and board, is estimated to be £780–1,340 (€910–1560) per month, depending on type of accommodation, insurance and visa.

Career services

The university encourages local businesses to employ interns from the Utrecht student body. Utrecht University aims to prepare its students for working life as much as possible.

In 2015, Career Services was founded to build the bridge between students, degree programmes and the job market. Career Services offers its students (bespoke) trainings, personal coaching sessions, cv checks and provides them with information on alumni and their careers.
