Student life

Oregon State University offers a friendly, welcoming community where students can get involved in their favorite activities — and try new ones. Students can choose from more than 300 clubs and activities, including student government, sports, community service, social and environmental awareness, Greek life, theater and music. Oregon State also hosts a variety of events — many that are open to the community — such as lectures, concerts, festivals and other cultural programs.

It’s a quiet community that’s perfect for studying, but there’s always something to do. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do throughout the year. In the warmer months, you can enjoy walking around our downtown, floating down the Willamette river, or hiking. During winter, you can head up to the mountains to ski or play in the snow.

Downtown Corvallis is just a 15 minute walk from campus, where a wide range of local restaurants thrive. From fresh seafood to pan-Asian and Latin fusion, Corvallis is a true food destination.

Accommodation

There is a variety of housing options available to suit the needs of every student:

  • On-campus housing is available to all international students in 15 different residence halls across campus. These halls offer a wide range of room types. The most popular room types for college students in the US are the Double Standard and Double Suite-Style rooms with shared restroom.
  • Homestay: OSU has a network of carefully selected homestay hosts who welcome international students into their homes. Students may have a private or shared room and can enjoy a daily meal with their host families.
  • Global Village: an on-campus housing community for undergraduate students who are passionate about cultural exchange and global experiences.
  • Off-campus Graduate Housing: available to all students with Graduate Pathway in their study plan.

For students whose programs do not have an on-campus housing requirement, a variety of off-campus options, such as apartments, houses and rooms to rent can be found throughout the community.

F-1 students who would like to gain practical work experience in their field of study may be authorized for Optional Practical Training. This authorization is usually to stay and work in the US for one year after graduation.
  • Work While Studying: Degree-seeking international students on F-1 visas are eligible to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week while the term is in session and up to 40 hours per week between terms and summer vacations. F-1 international students in language training programs (including Pathway programs) are not eligible for employment or practical training.
