History

  • 1858 John Ruskin opened a School of Art in Cambridge, laying the foundation for the institution which grew to become Anglia Ruskin University.
  • 1989 The Essex Institute of Higher Education and Cambridgeshire College of Arts & Technology came together to form a polytechnic.
  • 1992 Became a university and changed its name from Anglia Polytechnic University (APU) to Anglia Ruskin in 2005.

Location and Transport

  • The university is based on two campuses – one in the centre of Cambridge and one in Chelmsford.
  • Cambridge is only an hour from London, by train, and can be reached via the M11.
  • Chelmsford offers quick access to London, only 30 minutes by train, and good road connections to the whole of the UK.

Accommodation

  • No official guarantee but in reality the university can accommodate all of Chelmsford applicants and more than 95% of Cambridge applicants (who do not already live in Cambridge).
  • Chelmsford: student village with en-suite rooms in flats of 3–6 (self-catering). £74.90–£83.00 en-suite.
  • Chelmsford: private rentals £55–£90.00 per week
  • Cambridge: modern en-suite and older style halls, along with university owned and leased houses (self-catering). £86.95 en-suite, £60.00–£94.00 non en-suite.
  • Cambridge: private rentals £60.00–£95.00 per week.

Student facilities, including Library and Computing

  •  The campuses are fully equipped for modern learning, including wifi areas, spacious well-stocked libraries and sports facilities.
  • A new centre of learning is being developed in Cambridge (£3.2-million development). The library has benefited from funding of £1.5 million from the East of England Development Agency.
