Social care Year 1: Develops students’ understanding of the social groups most likely to be in need of social care services, and investigates how social images are created, maintained and challenged; it offers a comprehensive study of how health and social care services are organised, and students get the chance to undertake a period of supervised voluntary work in a voluntary or community-based organisation. Year 2: Looks at concepts of quality and management in support services, and examines contemporary welfare institutions, including the provision of housing, health and long-term care; it discusses poverty and social exclusion, and explores the policy and legislation surrounding support services and how they promote the autonomy and independence of consumers; students also gain an understanding of the methods used in policy and practice research. Year 3: Helps students develop the analytical skills to compare the provision and delivery of social care within European states; students can further explore quality care and support services, especially with regard to issues such as staff management, health and safety, and financial management; the final year also examines how crime in modern society is prevented and controlled; it offers students the chance to take on a project negotiated with an external organisation, and to produce a substantial, independently researched dissertation. Deaf studies Year 1: Provides students with invaluable insight into key disability issues and related D/deaf perspectives; it also introduces students to British Sign Language (BSL), and to sign linguistics. Year 2: Brings a sharp focus on the D/deaf community itself, including D/deaf issues in disability practices; it also investigates the fascinating subject of deafness and language development Year 3: Explores key themes of deaf blind policies and practices technological issues related to deafness; students also have the opportunity to enhance their BSL skills as well as the option to work or research within the deaf community.
