Year 1 introduces the theory and ethics of public relations, with a focus on the role of public relations as a management tool; it considers communication as a cognitive and social activity – the main tool that makes society possible; it identifies the key factors to be considered in making sense of contemporary media, and explores the role of the mass media in British politics; year 2 further develops an understanding of practical public relations, focusing on communication strategies and media relations; the second year also investigates broadcast journalism and journalistic writing; year 3 explores key approaches to the study of political communication and examines selected contemporary case studies; it lifts the lid on effective promotional writing, and offers the chance to put theory to the test in an industry work placement; in Spanish, at each level of study students will take two Spanish language modules with a minimum of four class contact hours per week; in addition, students will take a minimum of one further module in each year of study; in Year 1, this will include a study of contemporary France or Germany and Spain; students could also take a further module from: film studies, linguistics, business studies and information technology; in year 2, modules may be: Catalan language, culture and society; the Spanish civil war; comparative European literature; linguistics; or research methods; in year 3, students could take: language in translation; questions of identity in European literature; words and their structure; culture and identity in contemporary Spain; dependency and development in Latin America; or undertake a Spanish studies project.
