Year 1: Students take core modules in both languages and introductions to German, Austrian, Brazilian and Portuguese literature, history and culture. Year 2: In Portuguese and German, students' language skills are consolidated to prepare them for the year abroad; students take modules in literature, history, politics and society from a wide choice of modules in German, Portuguese and Brazilian studies; as part of the German course, Dutch is normally available as are modules in linguistics. Year 3: Is spent abroad divided between the 2 languages, either working, teaching or studying in Portugal, Brazil, Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Year 4: Students develop their command of both languages and their use in increasingly sophisticated contexts, and study optional modules drawn from the areas of literature, history, politics, society, media and linguistics; in both languages, students may also choose to write a dissertation.
